Communication and Culture AS/A2 · AQA
Communication and Culture is a brand new, fascinating subject that will get you to step outside the classroom and mix what you learn with people, with media, with music and with everyday experiences that affect each and every one of us.
Course Outline
4 units – Examinations worth 50% – Coursework worth 50%.
AS Level
At AS identity and self-presentation is studied and the impact culture makes on our sense of self is explored.
Unit One – Understanding Communication and Culture – Exam in June (50%).
Topics are:
- Identity and Self Presentation
- Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication
- Sub-Cultures and Group Communication
- Cultural Studies
- Semiotics
Unit Two – Portfolio of Work (50%)
A 500 word investigation into your own personal use of your verbal and non-verbal behaviour to communicate your Identity.
A 1000 word exploration of a cultural activity for example shopping, listening to music, street signage.A 6-8 minute creative, web based/multi-media presentation centred around the impact Culture has made on our Identity.
A2 Level
At A2 you are expected to think critically and analytically about our culture, evaluating and deconstructing a wide range of texts from a variety of Ideological perspectives.
Unit Three – Communicating Culture – Exam in June (50%)
Critical theories such as Feminism, Marxism, Post-Modernism, Post Colonialism are studied and applied to cultural production and consumption in contemporary society.
Unit Four – Portfolio of Work (50%)
An independent study into how the Individual interacts with the broader Cultural Environment. Findings are presented as a 2000 word report and a ten minute creative web based project that could be a Film, Podcast, Vlog, Blog, Website or PowerPoint.

Classes are a mixture of lecture, debate, group and individual work with students being encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning in a student centred teaching environment.
