Introduction

A practical based course designed for students who have little or no dance experience. Ideal if you are enthusiastic about dance and want to learn new skills.

Course Outline

Unit 1: Critical Appreciation
Students study at least two Professional dance works.
Assessment: Written paper – 1 hour (externally assessed)
50 marks – 20%

Unit 2: Set dance
Students perform a solo dance that will be taught by the teacher and is set by AQA exam board. The style of the dance is Contemporary.
Assessment: Practical Exam (externally assessed)

30 marks – 20%

Unit 3: Performance in a duo/group
Students perform in a duo or group dance that relates to a Professional dance work students have studied.  The performance will last between 3 - 3 ½ minutes.
Assessment: Practical exam (controlled assessment)

30 marks - 20%

Unit 4: Choreography

This unit is in 2 parts.

Part 1 - students learn 3 motifs/phrases that they then develop themselves into a solo performance.

Part 2 - students choreograph a solo/duo or group dance from an idea/theme of their choice.

Assessment:Practical exam (controlled assessment)
Part 1 -  20 marks/15%
Part 2 - 40 marks/25%

Please note that your enrolment on to a particular course must be approved by the Head of that department.

If your school does not offer GCSE Dance and you would like to gain a GCSE in dance, Aquinas College offer this course to students who are currently in Year 11 at school.  The qualification is taught over 1 year.



Reasons to study GCSE Dance:

 • If you want to study any Performing arts related course at college, GCSE Dance is a vital qualification to have.


 •

If you want to go on to study dance at A level having GCSE Dance is prefered.
