English GCSE AQA
This course is suitable for those students who have previously gained grade D in GCSE English or GCSE English Language and who would like to achieve a grade C in this subject.
Course Outline
Unit One: Understanding and Producing Non-Fiction Texts (40%)
Throughout the year, you will develop and improve the skills needed to gain a good grade in the final exam. Your teacher will help you to read and analyse media and non-fiction texts, identifying the techniques used by the writer and you will practise how to write detailed exam style answers. You will also develop your skill in writing for different audiences and purposes.
Unit 2: Speaking and Listening (20%)
You will develop your ability to express your ideas clearly and succinctly, listen attentively and respond to what others say in an appropriate style. You will be assessed on your spoken contributions in different situations.
Candidates have to complete three oral assignments, including:
- Presenting
- Discussing and listening
- Role playing
Each activity will be marked out of 15 and the marks added together to give a final mark out of 45. Unit 3: Understanding and Producing Creative Texts (40%) You will develop your ability to read accurately and analyse the techniques used by writers to create particular effects. You will study a range of genres. In addition to this you will revise how to communicate your ideas clearly and accurately in writing.
Candidates have to complete 2 folders which are:
Understanding Creative Texts (literary reading) 3–4 hours (20%)
You will write about a play by Shakespeare, a text from the English Literary Heritage and a text from a different culture. Each task will be marked out of 15 and the marks added together to give a final mark out of 45.
Producing Creative Texts 3–4 hours (20%)
You will have a choice of styles of writing and must complete two pieces. Each piece will be marked out of 15 and a further 15 marks are available for accuracy.
Your lessons will be organised into four taught lessons.
