Product Design (3D Design) AS/A Level · AQA
If you enjoy designing and making things, an AS or A Level in Product Design (3D Design) could provide you with a stimulating and enjoyable experience. At AS you will gain and develop skills and knowledge in a range of materials as well as developing an understanding of the broader issues for the designer, including the environmental sustainability of
products and their manufacture.
A Level study offers you the opportunity to further develop the knowledge and practical skills from AS, alongside an understanding of the processes of commercial production and manufacture.
Course Outline
AS Level
- Unit 1 – ‘Materials, components and application’ – you’ll look at materials, production processes and the impact of cost and design. Written Exam, 2 hours (50% of total AS marks, 25% of total A Level marks).
- Unit 2 – ‘Learning through designing and making’ – you’ll design and make 3 products for your coursework in a range of materials and media. Coursework, Portfolio unit (50% of total AS marks, 25% of total A Level marks).
A Level
- Unit 3 – ‘Design and manufacture’ – this unit helps you to appreciate the relationship between design and technology or form and function. Written Exam, 2 hours (25% of total A Level marks)
- Unit 4 – ‘Design and making in practice’ is the practical and ‘coursework’ part. You’ll design and make a product and record the processes that you went through. Coursework, Portfolio unit (25% of total A Level marks).
