Product Design (Textiles) AS/A Level · AQA
If you enjoy designing and making using textile materials, an AS or A Level in Product Design (Textiles) could provide you with a stimulating and enjoyable experience. At AS, you will have the opportunity to study and work with a wide variety of fabrics and components used in the design and manufacture of textile products.  At A Level, you will have the opportunity to further develop the knowledge and practical skills from AS. You will continue to design and manufacture exciting textile products alongside an understanding of the processes and procedures of commercial textile manufacture.

Course Outline
AS Level


  • Unit 1 – ‘Materials, components and application’. It introduces you to subjects like understanding materials, production processes and the impact of cost and design. It is the academic part of year one. Written Exam, 2 hours (50% of total AS marks, 25% of total A Level marks)
  • Unit 2 – ‘Learning through designing and making’ is the practical ‘coursework’ where you will work on your own design with a range of materials and media. Coursework, Portfolio Unit (50% of total AS marks, 25% of total A Level marks)
A Level

  • Unit 3 - ‘Design and manufacture’. This develops your holistic appreciation of the relationship between design and technology, or form and function. It is the academic part of year two.  Written Exam, 2 hours (25% of total A Level marks)
  • Unit 4 - ‘Design and making in practice’ is the practical ‘coursework’ part of year two. You will create a textile project and record the processes you went through.  Coursework, Portfolio unit (25% of total A Level marks)
