British Sign Language Level 1 & 2

We are pleased to be hosting the Level 1 & Level 2 British Sign Language courses here at Aquinas College.

Course Description – Level 1:

This qualification is designed to teach learners to communicate with Deaf people in British Sign Language (BSL) on a range of topics that involve simple, everyday language use. You will gain basic skills and confidence in production and reception of BSL.

The course is divided into three sections:

  1.  1. Unit BSL101 – Introduction to BSL which has a practical assessment of skills
  2.  2. Unit BSL102 – Conversation BSL which has a conversational assessment in BSL
  3.  3. Unit BSL103 – Communicate in BSL about everyday life which also has a conversational assessment in BSL

You will be required to do some private study at home, so homework and practice etc.


To understand and sue a limited range of simple words and sentences in BSL

To take part in simple, everyday conversations in BSL

To give and follow simple directions or instructions in BSL

To give and follow simple familiar statements or descriptions in BSL

Entry requirements:

You do not need to have any prior knowledge/experience of BSL.  You need to have sufficient sight, manual dexterity, facial and body movement to produce and receive BSL.  This will be explained to you at interview.


On completion of Signature Level 1 Award in BSL, a wide range of further qualifications are available.

 Course Description:  Level 2:

This qualification is designed to enable learners to develop their skills to communicate with Deaf people using British Sign Language (BSL) in a range of everyday situations.  The qualification will allow learners to participate in longer and more varied conversations than at Level 1.  The course will develop communication in BSL about real life, routine and daily experiences.  The learner will be able to deal with most routine communication and have enough understanding of grammar to cope with some non-routine communication.

This specification has been designed to be consistent with the National Language Standards at Level 2.

The course is divided into 3 sections:

  1. 1.Unit BSL201- BSL Receptive skills
  2. 2.Unit BSL202 – BSL Productive skills
  3. 3.Unit BSL203 – BSL Conversational skills
Entry requirements

The level 2 award can be taken following successful completion of the level 1 Award.


On completion of the level 2 Award, a wide range of further qualifications are available at Level 3 and Level 4 and could lead to various employment opportunities.


Level 1:   £480 Monday evenings 6 – 8 pm for 33 weeks starting 8th October 2018.

Level 2:   £572 Tuesday evenings 6 – 8 pm for 50 weeks starting 9th October 2018.  Part of the course will run over into the following academic year 2019/20 to complete the full 50 weeks.
