Building for the Future: Aquinas Students at AECOM

Aquinas students a AECOM

On 13th June 11 Maths and Physics students went for a visit to AECOM a civil engineering company with offices in Manchester. The division we visited linked to bridges and structures. The students heard presentations from six of the engineers, their backgrounds and some of the project areas they work on. There was also a speed networking activity where students had the opportunity to ask questions of each of the engineers. The students were then involved with a task to build a bridge from spaghetti and marshmallows that would hold a squash ball, tennis ball and plastic ball and it had to have certain dimensions. The students only had 30 minutes to think of the design and build it. The winning designers were Peter Armstrong and George Wilde.
