Poppies Exhibition

Our talented Textile Design and 3D Design students are showcasing a commemorative poppy exhibition at Merseyway Shopping Centre

A breath taking poppy installation has been unveiled at Merseyway Shopping Centre in remembrance of those who lost their lives and served in the armed forces during World War One.

The exhibition is the result of an initiative organised by Merseyway Shopping Centre, which invited Year 12 and 13 students from Aquinas College to produce an installation of individually designed poppies and poppies designed in teams to be put on display in the run-up to Remembrance Day. The display features over 1000 poppies using a variety of materials including wool, foil, cotton and wood.

Lauren Walton, Head of Art and Design at Aquinas College said “Our year 12 and 13 students welcomed the opportunity to work on a live brief, to make poppies for the commemorative poppy appeal. The students enjoyed the opportunity to work together to produce the poppies to a limited deadline of two weeks. They have produced an exciting display, with poppies made using techniques such as laser cutting, heat burning and knitting to name a few. The display has been made to a very high standard and we are extremely proud to present their work at Merseyway Shopping Centre”.
Victoria Nichol, Centre Manager said: “Our aim was to produce a poppy display that not only symbolises all who were lost and fought so bravely for our country during World War One, but also a meaningful project that showcases the talent of the younger generation in Stockport. The poppies the students have created are truly stunning and we’re thrilled with the hard work and effort they’ve put in to make this display”.

The poppies will be on display in the undercover mall outside Waterstones until Monday 11th November 2019. Well done to all the students involved in the project.
