Deaf Education Advocacy Fellowship
We are pleased to be hosting the Level 1 British Sign Language course here at Aquinas College.
This course will be held on a Tuesday Evening at 6.00 pm until 8.00 pm for a full academic year (35 weeks).
The course will cost £480 which includes examination costs (fees to be paid directly to DEAF org.)

This qualification is designed to teach learners to communicate with Deaf people in British Sign Language (BSL) on a range of topics that involve simple, everyday language use. You will gain basic skills and confidence in production and reception of BSL.
The course is divided into three sections:
- 1. Unit BSL101 – Introduction to BSL which has a practical assessment of skills
- 2. Unit BSL102 – Conversation BSL which has a conversational assessment in BSL
- 3. Unit BSL103 – Communicate in BSL about everyday life which also has a conversational assessment in BSL
You will be required to do some private study at home, so homework and practice etc.
To understand and sue a limited range of simple words and sentences in BSL
To take part in simple, everyday conversations in BSL
To give and follow simple directions or instructions in BSL
To give and follow simple familiar statements or descriptions in BSL
You do not need to have any prior knowledge/experience of BSL. You need to have sufficient sight, manual dexterity, facial and body movement to produce and receive BSL. This will be explained to you at interview.
On completion of Signature Level 1 Award in BSL, a wide range of further qualifications are available.
