Discover your hidden talents, by embarking on the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme. This is a programme of activities designed by you, and carried out in your spare time.
What does the Award involve ? There are four sections: Skills, Service, Physical Recreation, and the Expedition.
What level should I do ? At college you can do the Silver Award. It doesn't matter if you haven't done Bronze.
What guidance will I get ? You will meet for two periods a week with a group of students, and a member of staff. There will be chance to discuss possible activities for the Skills, Service and Physical Recreation sections, and to review progress in these sections. The remainder of the time will be devoted to training in the skills that you will need for the expedition.
Will there be any practical training ? Yes. There will be walks in the Peak District, which will allow you to practise using a map and compass. It is also a good chance to get to know people from the other Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme groups within college.
Are there any hidden expenses ? The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme charges for the record books and all their other support (£25). You will need some suitable footwear and clothing for walking, but tents and other expedition equipment can be borrowed free of charge.
What if I have already started a Duke of Edinburgh's Award ? If you would like to transfer to one of the college groups, you can just continue with your Award from the stage that you are at. You would still need to carry out navigation training.
How do I enrol ? On registration day in September, you need to sign up in one of the blocks in which Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme is available. When you get your timetable, it will tell you when and where your group meets |
