OCR, Adult Literacy, Levels 1 and 2
This course will help students to improve their literacy skills. It leads to nationally recognised qualifications: Key Skills Communication and Adult Literacy level 2 are equivalent to GCSE grade C to A*. It is suitable for students who achieved a grade E or below at GCSE English or did not take GCSE at all.
This one-year course will give you 2 qualifications.
The first qualification you can get is Key Skills Communication. This is an all-round qualification that shows your ability in reading, writing and discussion. You will be assessed on the written work you do in class and the discussions that you are involved in. You will produce a portfolio which will include your best pieces of written work and evidence of the discussions you have had during the course.
The Adult Literacy test (see below) is part of the overall Communication qualification.
You will be entered for Level 1 Communication, and when you have achieved that you will start to work towards Level 2.
The second qualification you can get is a certificate in Adult Literacy. You will be entered for Level 1 Adult Literacy, and when you have achieved that you will start to work towards Level 2.
A pass in Level 1 Adult Literacy is equivalent to grades D - G at GCSE.
A pass in Level 2 Adult Literacy is equivalent to grades A* - C at GCSE.
The Adult Literacy certificate is a useful qualification on its own, but it is even more useful as part of a broader qualification, Key Skills Communication.
The tests are multiple choice in format with 40 questions to be completed in 60 minutes. They are based on real life texts, such as newspaper articles, brochures, web pages, memos and letters. They test understanding, spelling, punctuation and simple grammar.
The course will be taught in three lessons a week. You will have the opportunity to use computers regularly during the course.
