Information and Communications Technology AS/A2 OCR
This course will provide students the opportunity to use a range of software applications to develop systems for end users in a business context. This is a single unit award equivalent to one AS level (one year) or one A level (two years). It takes a more practical hands-on approach to ICT and as a result there is a substantial amount of coursework as opposed to examined content.
Course Outline AS Level Unit 1 - Presenting Information The use of word processing, presentation, website design and DTP software to convey information in different ways.
Unit 2 - How organisations use ICT You will look at an ICT case study, produce a report and use it in an examination Unit 3 - ICT Solutions for Individuals and Society
You will research, develop and present information on a particular topic
A2 Level Unit 9 - Working to a brief This unit assesses your ability to project manage the development of a project by setting timescales and objectives and then evaluating your progress towards these. You will be required to work as part of a team in order to complete this unit.
Unit 11 - Interactive Multimedia products This final unit could be from a variety of topics including multi-media, publishing or spreadsheet design. This will require the use of Flash® to develop your presentation.
Units 9 and 11 will be undertaken together
Unit 14 - Creating and developing Websites You will design and develop a website for an end-user. This will require the use of applications such as FrontPage® or Dreamweaver® to create a professional looking site.
The emphasis of this course is on assessed coursework rather than external examinations. There is only one examination during the two years of this course. However, there is a considerable amount of coursework in which students must design, build and evaluate their solutions and this involves a substantial written content. Students must have a good degree of self-motivation, self-discipline and independence in order to meet coursework deadlines.
Preferred Entry Requirements GCSE grade C or above in English and Mathematics would be desirable. There is a significant proof reading element so a good degree of literacy is important. GCSE ICT is not a requirement but would be useful.*
*Please note that your enrolment on to a particular course must be approved by the Head of that department.
