  • develop computational thinking through abstraction and decomposition
  • develop problem-solving ability.
  • develop an understanding of the range of contemporary computer hardware and software.
  • develop and appreciation of the social impact of computer systems.
  • develop software development skills using pseudo code and languages such as VB, HTML and ASP.

Course Outline
AS Level
Module 1 Problem Solving, Programming, Data Representation and Practical Exercise (2 hour computer based exam)
Module 2 Computer Components, The Stored Program Concept and the Internet.  (1 hour written paper)

(2.5 hour written exam)
Module 4 The Computing Practical Project

Lessons involve both taught theory and practical activity.  As part of the course, students will be required to complete a project that will involve writing a computer program although an understanding of a range of applications software will be important.  You will be required to work independently on your assignments and on developing your practical skills outside of lessons.  All necessary resources will be provided to support you throughout the course.

There is an emphasis on logical thinking and practical problem solving ability throughout the course and an element of mathematics is present within the units. The course is suitable for students who enjoy subjects such as science and maths.
