AS/A2 AQA

During the course you will have an opportunity to discuss such issues as:

What is the ‘Credit Crunch’?
Should we pay to use a motorway?
What causes a recession? 
Why are so many people homeless?
Should you pay for hospital treatment?
Should Britain join the Euro?
Should taxes be increased?
Should more be spent on the Health Service?

All of these will be supported by theory but the emphasis will be on highlighting relevant, interesting and topical issues.  You will be expected to take an interest in current affairs, want to learn about why the economy works as it does, debate issues and research evidence.

Course Outline
4 units - 2 for AS and 2 for A2 level.

AS Level
Markets and Market Failure The National Economy.

A2 Level
Business Economics and the Distribution of Income.

The National and International Economy.

Examination is by means of objective testing, data response, and essay type questions.

Why Study Economics?
Economics is an interesting and enjoyable subject to study.  At the end of the course students will have a better understanding of the economic world in which they live and will be able to make sense of the economic issues and events which affect them and which are increasingly dealt with in the media.  Economics is a subject that is valued by universities and employers and helps prepare students for a wide range of careers.  It combines well with a variety of subjects.

Preferred Entry Requirements
A good range of GCSEs.  A minimum of grade B in Maths and English is desirable.  No previous knowledge of Economics is required.  It is not necessary to have studied GCSE Economics for entry onto the course.*

*Please note that your enrolment on to a particular course must be approved by the Head of that department.
