The Advancing Physics course shows how physics is exciting, always developing, of great practical use in many ways and in many careers, as well as probing some of the deepest truths about the physical world.  Advancing Physics describes essential core ideas in physics in a variety of up-to-date and interesting settings.

AS course - consists of three modules - two are written and the third is coursework.

  1. Physics in Action
    Imaging • Sensing • Signalling • Testing materials • Designer materials
  2. Understanding Processes
    Wave behaviour • Quantum behaviour • Mapping space and time • Computing the next move
  3. Physics in use
    Materials research and presentation • Measurement - a practical project

A2 Course - consists of three modules - two are written and the third is coursework.

  1. Rise and Fall of the Clockwork universe
    Creating models • Out into space • Our place in the Universe Matter - very simple • Matter - very hot and cold
  2. Field and Particle Pictures
    Electromagnetic machines • Charge and field • Probing deep into matter
    Ionizing radiation and risk
  3. Researching Physics
    Practical investigation • Research briefing

What resources are provided for the course?
Resources include textbooks, a student CD rom and the following website contains important details of the course www.advancingphysics.iop.org

Preferred Entry Requirements
Grade BB or above in GCSE Science/ Physics and grade B or above in GCSE Maths. We also strongly recommend that you study AS/A2 Maths (Mechanics).*

*Please note that your enrolment on to a particular course must be approved by the Head of that department.
