AS/A2 AQA(B)
If you like reading and discussing a range of literature, are keen to read widely and work closely with a range of texts, you will enjoy this course. English Literature at AS/A2 Level gives you the opportunity to study a selection of different texts from a variety of time periods and genres. These include Shakespeare, poetry, contemporary fiction and drama. The course is designed to give you an understanding of the nature of literary study and the different approaches that can be used in reading and analysis.
The skills you will develop in English Literature include:
- Analytical and close reading.
- A sensitivity to a writer’s use of language and the ways in which this shapes a reader’s understanding.
- Coherent written expression and the ability to communicate clearly and concisely in writing.
- The ability to make useful and interesting comparisons and connections between texts.
- An understanding of the relationship between texts and the historical and cultural contexts.
Course Outline 4 units - 2 for AS level and 2 for A2 level - consisting of:
AS and A2 Level
- In each year, one unit will take the form of centre assessed coursework and the other, an examined unit on a selection of literary texts.
- You will study a wide range of texts and extracts from different genres (drama, poetry, fiction and non-fiction) and historical periods.
In order to qualify for the English Literature A2 level course, you would be expected to achieve a pass in both units at AS level.
Lessons will be a mixture of teacher-led activity, group and individual work and presentations. Trips to the theatre and lectures are organised as part of the course.
Preferred Entry Qualifications GCSE grade B or above in English Language and/or English Literature.
