German

We offer a range of German language levels to suit beginner through to a higher intermediate level (see below). You will be taught a range of topics designed to help you when travelling, going on holiday, communicating with relatives, using the language for business etc.

All our language courses run from September to July. You enrol prior to each term commencing. There may be an opportunity to enrol mid course—call 0161 419 3620 to enquire.

New Beginner: Monday (7.30pm – 9.00pm)

Course Outline

This course is intended for complete beginners with no previous experience of German.

The course covers a range of topics including meeting people and introducing yourself and others, talking about yourself, ordering drinks and snacks, directions and tourist information, accommodation and travel arrangements, shopping, German festivals and celebrations, numbers and times, restaurants and understanding menus

By the end of the course you will have:

  • been exposed to the German speaking world
  • developed basic reading, writing, speaking and listening skills
  • an understanding of basic grammatical rules
    the skills to communicate using basic German language.

Experience needed

No previous experience of German needed.

What you will need to bring

  • BBC Talk German 1 (book and CD pack)
  • Paper or notebook

 

Year 2: Monday (6.00pm – 7.30pm)

Course Outline

The course aims to broaden the learners’ understanding of German grammar and vocabulary and thus to enable them to communicate more and more with ease when travelling to a German-speaking country for business or pleasure.

We will be focusing on the skills of speaking and listening although there will also be tasks that practice reading and writing and other activities all of which promote intercultural understanding.

By the end of the course the learner will be able to:

  • talk about your daily life, where you live and what you do
  • make travel plans, talk about holidays, past and future and describe the weather
  • talk about eating out and describe a meal
  • describe your home
  • have an understanding of German traditions
  • describe people, clothes and give your opinion
  • have an understanding of basic German grammar

Experience needed

You should have already done German at beginners level before starting this course. If you have studied at Aquinas College Adult Centre previously, you will have just completed German (Beginners).

What you will need to bring

  • BBC Talk German 2 Book and CDs
  • Paper or notebook

 

Year 4: Tuesday (6.00pm – 7.30pm)

Course Outline

If you have already attended a couple of years of German, then this is the right class for you!  This course follows on from German Y3 last year.

The aim of the course is to refine your knowledge of German and German speaking countries and increase your confidence in the language.  This is a course aimed for people who feel comfortable with the basics of the German language and grammar and are ready to push their knowledge further.

This course aims to consolidate vocabulary and grammar structures and broaden your understanding, enabling you to communicate more easily when travelling to German speaking countries for business or pleasure. Using a variety of materials, including films and books, we will explore the language and culture of Germany and other German speaking countries, to gain a better understanding of the culture as a whole.

We will be focusing on the skills of speaking and listening, although there will also be some reading and writing, more detailed work on German grammar structures and other activities, all of which promote intercultural understanding.

Experience needed

The course is suitable for those who have a good basic knowledge of German language and grammar, or who have already completed a 2 year course. If you have studied at Aquinas College Adult Centre previously, you will have just completed German (Year 3).

What you will need to bring

  • Students will continue to use the Adult Coursebook Willkommen 2 3rd Edition (ISBN 978-1-471-80515-8)
  • Further reading materials (short stories in German) will be recommended
  • Extra material will be provided as required

Year Higher: Tuesday (7.30pm – 9.00pm)

Course Outline

This course is for anyone with a sound knowledge of German who have already completed intermediate courses in the language.  All learners will need to have had at least 4 years of previous study and knowledge of German.

The course aims to further develop your fluency through dialogue, pair and group work, discussion and debate.  You will occasionally read and prepare notes on current affairs/newspaper articles/literary extracts and will use this work for translation, oral summary and class discussion.

To further develop linguistic knowledge and ability, short oral presentation tasks may be set. Your will thus become more effective in communicating in German as well as gaining better cultural awareness of German speaking countries.

We will continue to study and revisit aspects of German grammar in more detail (up to AS/A Level standard) and often complete prose and translation tasks.

By the end of the course you will be able to speak German with increased confidence and fluency to help you  to communicate when in Germany, have a deeper understanding and knowledge of all aspects of German grammar, understand and use more complex sentence structures in both spoken and written German, better understand some of the history, traditions and culture of Germany and German-speaking countries.

You will be able to recognize, understand and use varied tenses such as the past, future and conditional/subjunctive.

Additional study/work required:

  • Regular reading and writing tasks set for homework. Vocabulary and grammar to be learnt and revised.  A short (3-5 minute) oral presentation task will be occasionally set.
  • English/German newspaper and magazine articles will sometimes be used for oral/class discussion/debate work. Other books to be recommended at the START of the course.

You may be able to start Advanced Courses in the language (Level B1-2) at alternative institutions.

Experience needed

You will need to have completed at least 4 years of study (or equivalent) from Beginners to Beginners Year 2 and Intermediate levels at Aquinas or at another educational establishment.

Students should have already done 4 years of German before starting this course.  If you have studied at Aquinas College Adult Centre previously, you will have just completed German (Year 5).

  • Pen
