In February A level Music students had the fantastic opportunity to watch a rehearsal by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in their purpose-built studio at the BBC in Media City UK. The orchestra were rehearsing Tchaikovsky Symphony No.5 ready for concert performance and BBC Radio 3 broadcast. The symphony is of relevance to the A level examination
Orchestra rehearsals are not public events, and we were very lucky to secure an invitation. As the only guests we had perfect seats in the third row, only a few metres from the conductor and players. Students experienced the full power of a large symphony orchestra in proximity. It was a privilege to be able to observe a normal working rehearsal for the orchestra and enthralling to see the speed at which they worked.
It was fascinating to hear to the changes made by the conductor and see the professionalism exhibited by all members of the orchestra. Students got the opportunity to speak to some of the players and asked interesting and relevant questions.
