To start their Applied Business course, the Lower Sixth students visited Chester Zoo to support their Unit 2 Business Dynamics coursework. The trip provided a valuable opportunity to explore how a large, well-known organisation like Chester Zoo operates, particularly in areas such as customer experience, sustainability, and marketing strategy. Students were given insight into how the zoo balances its business objectives with its conservation mission, as well as how it generates revenue through ticket sales, memberships, retail outlets, and events. Students were asked to complete a number of tasks including a pricing task focussing on their new Reserve overnight accommodation.
One of the highlights of the visit was exploring the newly developed Heart of Africa exhibit. Students observed firsthand how the zoo uses themed environments and storytelling to enhance visitor engagement, a technique directly relevant to their coursework topics. Another memorable moment was seeing the zoo’s newest arrival: a baby snow leopard. The trip provided students with rich, real-world examples that they can now reflect on and apply in their upcoming assignments.
