Politics students recently visited a snowy Washington DC is support of their US Government and Politics studies. Perhaps the highlight of the trip was a visit to the New York Times’ Washington Bureau to meet with two of their senior journalists, Special Correspondent Elisabeth Bumiller and White House Correspondent, Zolan Kanno-Youngs. The students heard about the challenges of covering the Trump and Biden presidencies, along with getting some off-the-record commentary on this unprecedented period in US government. The journalists were really candid, and each spent time discussing their careers and taking questions from students about what it’s like to work for a major international newspaper. For anyone thinking of a career in journalism or any aspect of media coverage, our visit to the NYT would have been informative and inspiring in equal measure.
