On Tuesday 3rd October, Aquinas College took a group of A Level Politics students to the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester. Students learn about UK political parties, pressure groups, and the role of the media in shaping the political agenda as part of their course, so this was an ideal opportunity for them to get a closer look at all of these organisations in action. Students attended speeches given by government ministers, including Michael Gove and Suella Braverman. They were able to meet and ‘interview’ prominent politicians including Nigel Farage and Jeremy Hunt. They toured the stalls and displays set out by interest groups such as the NFU and the Cats Protection League, asking questions about what such groups hoped to achieve by being at Conference.
Students were also lucky enough to spend time with prominent journalists from the BBC, LBC, and GB News. Jon Sopel and Emily Maitliss of ‘The News Agents’ podcast team kindly spent time with the students discussing the prospects for the next UK General Election. A really good day was enjoyed by all and, as expected, the students were a credit to the college.
