The Aquinas Senior Team Maths Challenge brought together 32 students in teams of four for a fast-paced afternoon of problem solving and teamwork. The event followed the structure of the UK Mathematics Trust Senior Team Maths Challenge, beginning with the demanding Crossnumber Round, where precision and logical thinking were essential from the outset. This was followed by the high-pressure Shuttle Round, testing both accuracy and clear communication as solutions were relayed between teammates. The competition concluded with the collaborative Group Round, where teams tackled extended problems that required creativity, resilience and strong mathematical discussion. The standard was exceptionally high, with first and second place separated by just 4 points out of a possible 180 — a testament to how closely fought the competition was. Congratulations to James, Caeleb, Aidan and Davy for their win!
At the end of the event, the Principal joined us to present the awards, recognising both the competitive success and the commitment shown by all participants. The winning teams received small LEGO sets — a fitting STEM-inspired prize that celebrates creativity, design and problem solving. Every student also received a participation prize of a Rubik’s Cube and a pencil, reinforcing the message that mathematical thinking is something to be practised, played with and developed beyond the classroom. The challenge was a fantastic showcase of teamwork, perseverance and the depth of mathematical talent within the college.
