A bumper crop of 30 Chemistry students took part in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge Lower 6th Competition in June this year. The Cambridge Challenge extends students beyond the A-level specification with problem-solving questions that, this year, featured a mix force constants (pushing physical chemistry calculations) and IR spectroscopy (analysing complex structures from wavenumbers). They also explored looking at advanced bonding models for some “super oxides”.
Nationally, nearly 15400 students took part with 30% achieving a Copper Award, 21% achieving Silver and less than 9% achieving Gold. Our Aquinas students performed brilliantly with 11 (37%) achieving a Copper, 12 (40%) achieving a Silver and 4 students (13%) achieving a Gold award. This sets the students up well to tackle the Royal Society of Chemistry International Olympiad in late January. Principle Jo Dommett awarded the students their certificates in September.
